Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A two-story gray horizontal-siding house with multiple gables, a covered front porch with white columns and railing, and a dark front door, fronted by a patchy green and brown lawn under a clear blue sky.

Sizing a mini-split here starts from the heating load, because the cooling side demands nothing. Homes in Teton County, MT have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. A contractor quoting an installation has to establish what the unit is being asked to do on the coldest days, not the warmest ones, and heat pump capacity drops as outdoor temperatures fall, so the margin built into the design matters. A system that looks adequate on paper but was sized without accounting for how deep winter runs in this part of Montana will run at or past its limit when the house needs it most.

The electrical panel in a house here is where a mini-split installation often gets decided. Half the homes in Teton County, Montana were built in 1962 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Wiring and service panels put into houses of that era were sized for appliances and heating equipment that drew far less than a modern mini-split outdoor unit pulls on startup. A contractor quoting the job will open the panel box before settling on anything else, because what it can carry determines whether the install is straightforward or whether an electrical upgrade goes on the scope first.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System This Installation Covers

Isometric illustration of a cutaway gray house with a dark shingled roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by piping to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room being conditioned, delivering treated air directly into that space. Outside the house, the outdoor unit houses the compressor and sits on a pad or bracket against the exterior wall. These two units are the core of what a contractor brings to the job.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small penetration in the wall to connect the indoor and outdoor units, and a condensate drain line carries moisture away from the indoor handler to a safe discharge point. A dedicated electrical circuit feeds the outdoor unit from the panel.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed for your specific home.

Licensing and Legal Requirements in Teton County, Montana

Montana’s contractor licence does not reach a casual, minor or inconsequential job whose total price for labour, materials and everything else is less than $2,500 — and the exemption is lost if the work is only part of a larger operation, or if a job is divided up to get under the figure.

Severe Weather Events in Teton County

Teton County's climate puts real demands on heating and cooling equipment, and those demands vary with how hard the weather runs year to year. A mini-split sized and installed for local conditions handles that load differently than one spec'd for somewhere else.
