A two-story light gray house with white-trimmed windows and a small front porch, framed by leafy trees, with a wet concrete walkway crossing a green lawn to a sidewalk in the foreground.

A mini-split sized and installed for this area spends most of the calendar year off. Homes in Petroleum County, MT run cooling about two months a year, from July through August. The compressor, the condenser fan, and the contactor sit idle through fall, winter, and spring, and components that stand cold for months can seize, corrode, or lose refrigerant charge without any visible sign until a homeowner flips the unit on in July. A contractor quoting an installation here has to account for that: a system that sits more than it runs needs tight refrigerant work and protected electrical connections from day one, because the first hot week is when every fault announces itself at once.

Older electrical panels are where mini-split installations in this county tend to stall. Half the homes in Petroleum County, Montana were built in 1983 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house built to that point in time carried a service panel sized for whatever was heating and cooling it then, and a mini-split draws differently than that equipment did. A contractor quoting the unit is also pricing what the panel behind it can actually support, and in stock like this, that answer sometimes changes the scope before the new equipment is ever ordered.

The Parts of a Mini-split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house with a dark shingled roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units in separate rooms connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being served, delivering conditioned air directly into that space. The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, typically on a pad or bracket against an exterior wall, and houses the compressor and the fan that shed heat to the outside air.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor head to the outside, and a dedicated electrical line feeds the outdoor unit from the breaker panel.

The drawing alongside shows how these pieces relate in a standard installation, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how the system is configured for your home.

Licensing and Legal Requirements in Petroleum County, Montana

Montana’s contractor licence does not reach a casual, minor or inconsequential job whose total price for labour, materials and everything else is less than $2,500 — and the exemption is lost if the work is only part of a larger operation, or if a job is divided up to get under the figure.
