A contractor diagnosing a mini-split in Liberty County checks the compressor and refrigerant circuit with heating demand in mind, because that is the only real load this system carries. Homes in Liberty County, MT have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. The compressor here earns its wear through cold-weather operation: repeated startup cycles in low outdoor temperatures, sustained runs at reduced capacity, and the thermal stress that comes with deep cold. Coil icing, refrigerant pressure faults, and contactor wear all point back to that heating history when a technician opens the unit.

Older wiring and walls that were never built around modern refrigerant systems carry a story that shows up once a unit comes apart. Half the homes in Liberty County, Montana were built in 1966 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A mini-split added to a house like that was almost certainly set into a structure that had already been adapted once or twice before it arrived. What a contractor finds inside the unit matters, but so does what surrounds it: junction boxes, line sets, and penetrations that were fitted in, not designed in. Parts availability for the equipment itself is its own question, and a contractor working through a repair here answers that question alongside the condition of the installation around it.

The Parts of a Mini-split a Contractor Checks During Repair

Isometric grey illustration of a cutaway house showing two rooms with wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The indoor air handler is the piece most homeowners know by sight. It mounts high on an interior wall and pushes conditioned air into the room. When this unit is the problem, the signs show up as weak airflow, ice on the unit, or air that is not reaching the set temperature. The contractor pulls the cover and looks at the fan, the coil, and the sensors inside.

Outside, the compressor and condenser unit does the heavy lifting of the refrigeration cycle. A refrigerant line set and a condensate drain line run through the wall to connect the two units. The line set, the valves at each end, and the condensate drain are all points a contractor checks when the indoor and outdoor units both appear intact but the system is still not performing.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to your specific installation.
